Wind InsightTM live demonstration
To plan for power system disturbances from fluctuating wind generation, you need the best forewarning you can get. Wind InsightTM is a wind power forecasting tool that provides alerts and animations for potential large rapid changes in wind power generation. This site demonstrates the tool on 126 MW wind power capacity installed in the south-east South Australia region*, from the Lake Bonney 1 and Canunda wind farms.Learn about interpreting the Wind InsightTM forecasts and see what's new in 2012.

Horizontally propagating wind features have been found to be a major cause of large rapid changes in wind power for Australian wind farms. These features are generally predicted well by numerical weather prediction systems, but can be displaced by 50-100 km relative to their eventual true position. The Wind InsightTM wind power field animations (Figure B) allow a forecast user to visualise the propagating wind features predicted in the region of single or multiple wind farms, assess likely scenarios in wind power production from displacing these features and make decisions accordingly. For more information, download our interactive self-guided presentation, or learn about interpreting Wind InsightTM forecasts.
Subscribe for the demo Wind InsightTM alerts to be emailed to you, along with the likelihood. The approximate average frequency of emailed alerts is one every four days. You can of course unsubscribe any time.
Wind InsightTM forecasts can be provided for any single wind farm and for aggregations of multiple wind farms anywhere in the world. The large rapid change alerts can be tuned to meet specific forecast user needs. Please contact us for more information.
The Wind InsightTM forecasts demonstrated here use the ACCESS-A numerical weather prediction system forecasts from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The conversion of wind speed forecasts to available wind power was devised using publicly available historical wind power observation data from the Australian Energy Market Operator. The demo forecasts do not currently use any real-time wind power observations or turbine availability data but if this were available the forecasts could be improved.
*The south-east South Australia region is a good representative site to observe large rapid changes in wind power that can occur at most Australian wind farms.
